The art room 8
Renée Levi sees the entire room as a canvas for her art room. For the artist, this includes the existing architectural elements such as the floor, walls, beams and furniture. But also less tangible aspects such as perspectives and shadow lines of light and movement or the view outside. Levi's artistic intervention unfolds the effect of the room in its entirety and directs the gaze in a wide variety of directions and perceptions. Her work thus consists of two painterly elements: on the one hand, a two-dimensional painting that encloses everything in the lower part of the room in a kind of “tub”. The line where the color changes to the usual white of the walls is oriented along the view when you stand in the room and look from one side to the other - similar to when your gaze wanders along the horizon of a mountain range. The surface takes up the color of the floor, but is mixed with many silver pigments so that the surface shimmers depending on the incidence of light. The second element is a painted mural that takes up the entire front wall of the room. It is designed for the view from the bed - perhaps the most common perspective of a hotel room. In Levi's typical manner, the painting shows large, enormously dynamic movements, framed by a kind of bordure. Here, shades of green and blue alternate, flowing together and meeting on doors, cupboards or walls, like branches or water making their way through the landscape.
