The art room 7
For Kunstzimmer 7, Gina Folly has staged a large-format photograph as an elegant light box, with the photograph being replaced annually. In Folly's elegant photo essay, the artist has been documenting Basel from an unusual perspective for a few years now, showing how the city is changing - and what is happening on its outskirts, next to the familiar places and perspectives. Like an additional window in the small attic room, the photo shows a summer scene by a river. The almost inconspicuous-looking situation encourages close observation. Various groups of people, for example, are chatting or having a picnic, cooling off from the summer heat by standing in the water, taking photos or taking an afternoon nap. The banks of the river are neatly mowed and clean, crossed by a rusty railroad bridge covered in graffiti. The scene radiates peace and harmony; it could be anywhere in the world and yet is so typical of Basel. Like the probably disused bridge, the canalized river also bears witness to an industrial past in which this place was probably not yet an urban recreation area.
Anyone who recognizes the location also knows that the river - it is called “Wiese” - also forms the border between Basel and Germany. A border that the people depicted standing in knee-deep water effortlessly cross. And last but not least, the people themselves: they are together in different groups and yet seemingly without any obvious interaction. Nevertheless, they are all part of the same fleeting moment on a summer afternoon, which the artist captures with her camera. How will each and every one of them remember it?
