The art room 6

Bruno Zhu has created a kind of “spectral” room for his art room in the Hotel Teufelhof. All room surfaces such as walls, ceiling, but also doors and door frames were painted according to a specially compiled color chart - with one color for each direction. So everything on the ceiling is pink and everything facing east is blue. Small details such as the inside edges of cupboards and doors were also taken into account. This results in completely new color combinations depending on the point of view - some of which complement each other and some of which contrast. The result is a feeling of space that is almost weightless. The color combination chosen by Bruno Zhu is inspired by the colors of one of the most famous paintings on display in the Basel Art Museum: Arnold Böcklin's “Island of Life” from 1888. What is astonishing is how contemporary the hues of the almost 140-year-old painting are. And which stands for a time in which restraint, moderation and humility were preached. Böcklin's painting and Bruno's artwork are anything but: they are bursting with vibrancy and joie de vivre, are cheerful and playful
