The art room 5
Based on a hand drawing, Claudia & Julia Müller (*1964; *1965) stage familiar or enigmatic situations in Kunstzimmer 5 with a large-format wallpaper and merge figurative representation with ornaments and fragments, abstraction and dissection. Drawing on their extensive image archive, they examine the interrelationship of affection and distance, intimacy and strangeness, in short: the entire contradictory spectrum of human existence. Together with a painted lamp, the Kunstzimmer thematizes moments of transition, forms of cohabitation and situations of fragility and reorientation.their method of reactivating images through manual repetition is a way of “decelerating” the gaze in the present, a time that is increasingly flooded with photographic images. Driven by our desire to see and our exhibitionism, the everyday flood of images has taken on an unexpected omnipresence and relevance. Paradoxically, this visual overload also obscures our ability to see and understand. Selecting a particular image and allowing oneself to be completely absorbed by it, analyzing it by copying something digital, ephemeral, immaterial and translating it into a more permanent form as a wall drawing, enables both the artists and the guests in the hotel room to adopt a different way of seeing, of looking at images.
