The art room 1
In Sonnhild Kestler's art room, shapes and colors switch playfully back and forth between different materials and uses. Her iconic formal language appears sometimes as an embroidered decorative cushion, sometimes as upholstered furniture, sometimes as a woven tapestry. A wall painting covers almost the entire room, starting with a pink frieze that wraps around the walls like a ribbon. In two places, the painting develops into groups of individual figures - like a skyline of mythical creatures, menhirs or onion domes, under a starry sky. Sonnhild Kestler's colorful universe contains cultural influences from all over the world. Some elements are reminiscent of people or animals, others of vegetables, flowers or fruit. Still others remain abstract or are taken from geometric shapes. Colors, patterns and ornaments follow the logic of scraps of memory, inspired by numerous trips to India, but also by the folk art of Eastern Europe or South America, and not least by Swiss handicrafts. Sonnhild Kestler confidently perpetuates the almost extinct Swiss textile industry, using artfully traditional techniques such as manual embroidery and weaving. Unlike many textile designers, however, Kestler's designs are not created on a computer, but are the results of paper cut-outs which, when put together as paper collages, serve as templates for the various adaptations and techniques.

The Artist: Sonnhild Kestler
Sonnhild Kestler is one of Switzerland's most renowned textile designers and artists. In 2010, she was awarded the Grand Prix Design by the Federal Office of Culture. She has also been featured in the New York Times. Her designs and works have been exhibited at the Swiss National Museum, the Museum of Design and the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur, among others. She works together with renowned architects and interior designers, creating, for example, upholstered furniture series and complete furnishings for rooms such as the Sol Heure restaurant or the Davos youth hostel. The exclusive New York fabric manufacturer Maharam, founded in 1902, has dedicated its own collection of carpets, cushions and wallpapers to Sonnhild Kestler - as it did to some of the most famous designers of the 20th century, such as Alvar Aalto, Charles and Ray Eames or Gio Ponti and artists like Polly Apfelbaum, Rosemarie Trockel or Sarah Morris. Sonnhild Kestler has designed a series of carpets with the traditional South Baden-based company Designercarpets Drechsle, which are now hand-knotted in Kathmandu, Nepal, just like those by Verner Panton.
